Oct 28th 2008 In Search of the Halloween Spirit

Halloween is in three days and for some reason, I just am not my usual jubiliant self over it. I love Halloween. Maybe because a change in weather accompanies it, or because it signals the beginning of the holiday season, or just because I like to get scared and to scare people…I’m not sure. But I know that right now I feel pretty lackadaisical (I think that is how you spell it about it). Starting this week, I have seven weeks of weekend events I have to prepare for and run. They are all my doing, of course, but I still feel overwhelmed. Perhaps that’s why I can’t work myself up to my normal excitement? I plan on being a punk rocker. I was a teenager in the 80s but didn’t come close to dressing punk, so I figured now, over 20 years later, would be a good time to start. I am looking forward to that, sort of. Also, “Its the Great Pumkin Charlie Brown” comes on tonight. I always like that show. I even have many cool Halloween books surrounding me in my wonderful book store that y’all should visit on a regular basis. But my mood is still at ebb tide. To cheer me up, come by Moonlight Madness on Thursday and see me. We are doing many fun things, plus all books are 31% off! A bunch of vistors would definitely cheer me up!

Oct 13th 2008 Time for a Good Mystery

When I have time during the day, if I am not reading a book, I will generally read the PickensPlan blogs or go to Foxnews and read about the latest shenanigans from our elected officials. I read about converting vehicles to natural gas, or drilling more, or giving banks money so they can start lending again, yada, tada, yada…its a mystery to me that we can talk so much but never get anything done. So, what I want to do now is just read a good mystery. You got it…a fictional story loaded with good characters, plot twists, a few murders, maybe a couple of gruesome forensic scenes, some sexual tension between main characters, and an ending so surprising that I couldn’t figure it beforehand. This would be the way to spend an afternoon. Escape from reality for a short time and stretch out the brain cells. Now, a good mystery…..that’s a tough one. I could always read Patterson or Sanford, or Cornwell, some of the old tried and trues, but I could also take a chance and read something new, like Nigel McCrery’s “Still Waters.” Yes, I think I am going to do that right now.

Sep 25th 2008 I’ve been hacked!

What to do! Apparently, over the weekend, a Russian hacker hacked into my webaite and did nasty things to it. My passwords were changed and some other things were done (my web guy told me but it just flew over my head). Why would someone take the time to mess with a little bookstore’s website? It astonishes me. So, some of my more recent blogs were deleted and I can’t remember what they said. The Brisingr party went very well. The black dragon pinata was mutilated and all of its insides were taken as spoils and I am reading a very interesting horror novel entitled “House of Leaves”. I will review it when I am done. So, what else is new?

Sep 10th 2008 Brisingr Release Party

I am very excited about my second release party. The first one we had here at Serendipity Books for Breaking Dawn was a resounding success! People will dress in medieval costume, test their knowledge of the Algaesia Ancient language, smack a pinata, read their favorite passages from the first two books, and mingle until midnight when the book can be released. The main reason I like these parties so much is because all the people who come are very excited about the book and genuinely can’t wait to start reading it to find out what happens next in the lives of their favorite characters. Its refreshing to see kids excited about a book. Their enthusiasm is catching and believe it or not, sometimes the adults are more giddy than the kids! If you had not planned on joining us September 19th at 11:30 pm, mark your calendar and plan to be here. I guarantee you will have a good time.

Aug 6th 2008 Ron Paul Book Club

Ron Paul has started a “campaign for Liberty” since his failed bid for the White House. Part of the campaign is creating a strong grassroots  organization to help get out the word and to build momentum. One of their ideas is to have bookstores hold Ron Paul book clubs. I am seriously thinking of doing this. I am a Paul supporter and became very excited during the primary season when I found out how many other Paul supporters are in the hill country area. Also, I am so fed up with our government; they are controlled by those with money and power, not by us as they should be in a republic, and I don’t know what I can do about it. I can vote, of course, but it just doesn’t seem to be enough anymore when the candidates you have to choose from are already bought and paid for. So, this idea came along and I thought I might jump at it. Its either this or start a revolution with protests and marches. What do you think? Would you be open to a book club that centers around the belief in liberty and independence?

Aug 1st 2008 Breaking Dawn Release and Hootapalooza

Well, tonight is the release party and I am excited! The books haven’t arrived yet, they won’t be in until the afternoon, so til then, I am going to be anxious. What will I do if they don’t make it!!! I have made a Pin the Tail on the Werewolf game. Did a good job if I say so myself! I’m thinking that I am going to serve a red velvet cake and blood red punch tonight also. I think that goes with the vampire theme pretty well, don’t you? Tomorrow is Hootapalooza. The news says it is going to 105 degrees!!! Of course, but this is central Texas so we could have a last minute thunderstorm (one can only hope). I think I have it all under control, but last minute surprises are what makes things exciting. What could be more serendipitous than a last minute snafu that turns out to be the best thing that could have happened? Unless it the UPS truck not making the delivery because it broke down!
